New Sculpture at Scoil Éinne

Article in the Galway First paper on Sunday, 22 June 2008

Spiddal national schools Scoil Mhichil Naofa and Scoile Mhuire have merged to create one school, Scoil Einne. To celebrate this, Cork artist Julie Forrester has been commissioned to create a large external sculpture with the pupils.

The sculpture is a large mosaic made out of clay tiles that each child in the school will have designed individually, based on what their name means to them.

It will be in the Spiddal colours, of blue and yellow, and the end result will look a little like a Celtic Torc with a pool of water on either end. The project is part of the government scheme called One per cent for Art, which specifies that any major public structure should put aside one per cent of the budget for a public art feature. This scheme aims to promote a dialogue about art in everyday situations.

Each child in the school has taken part and it will be available to the public to view by the middle of July
